Julie Nangala was born in c.1973 near Pauls Springs, approximately 320 km northwest from Alice Springs, in the vicinity of Yuendumu. She is the daughter of the renowned artist Dorothy Napangardi. Julie has two children, a son and a daughter.
Julie has five sisters, including Sabrina, who is also a very talented artist and whose work is exhibited here today. Eunice Napangardi, Polly Napangardi Watson and her mother, Dorothy, have been instrumental and have been a great influence in the artistic development of the girls.
Julie’s paintings depict traveling women through the sand-plains of the desert to participate in women’s ceremonies. Her technique is a series of overlapped dotting to create an illusion of swirling lines to show the sand hills, water holes and escarpments of her country.
