Background

Elton Bennett (1910-1974) grew up on the Washington coast in the small town of Hoquiam. His internationally-acclaimed serigraphs reflect the mood and character of the Pacific Northwest and the blue collar jobs he held in his early years in the area’s lumber, fishing and dredging businesses. His wife Flora, who he married at the age of 35 encouraged his artistic pursuits and at the age of 45 they had saved enough money that he was able to quit his other jobs and devote himself exclusively to being an artist.

He selected silkscreen printing as his medium because of the many ways it allowed him to manRiverland in Mid Februaryipulate compositions. You may find some of his favorite components shared among the different compositions on display here. His early serigraphs tended towards dark colors and it was not until he began experimenting with patches of bold color that his art works caught on. He and Flora traveled extensively in later years, and were among ninety-two people who perished when a Pan American jet liner crashed while approaching the Pago Pago airport during a violent tropical squall.
